Points positifs

Highlights

Six responsible choices that made the difference

1

The train for all but 2

The 18 Paris ↔ Aix-en-Provence round trips emitted 79 kg CO₂e. By plane, about 6,060 kg: 77 times more.

2

A destination reachable by train

93% of the distance was travelled by high-speed train, for less than 9% of transport emissions.

3

A bivouac night and a historic bastide

The survival-camp night emitted nothing, and the Bastide's construction (19th century) is already amortised. Accommodation is only 11% of the total.

4

Near-zero-impact activities

Survival camp, on-site activity and a walk around Marseille: 2 kg CO₂e in total.

5

A third of covers without meat or fish

49 vegetarian or vegan meals out of 146, including a mostly vegetarian lunch on the boat.

6

A September offsite

No heating needed, unlike a winter offsite.

What if…?

What these choices avoided

Three alternative scenarios, calculated with the same method, to measure the weight of each decision.

What if the offsite had been held in Marrakech?

Paris ↔ Marrakech round-trip flight (about 4,200 km): 701 kg CO₂e per person, with the rest of the event unchanged.

  • Provence and Marseille (actual)75 kg / person
  • Marrakech≈ 746 kg / person
➡️ Choosing Marseille avoided about 14 tonnes of CO₂e 10× less

What if the menu had been different?

Across the 7 lunches and dinners served (146 covers, breakfasts unchanged). Total event footprint:

  • Vegetarian at every meal −124 kg1,452 kg · 69.1 kg / person
  • ✅ Actual menus (beef, poultry, pork, fish, vegetarian)1,576 kg · 75.0 kg / person
  • Mix of beef, chicken and pork +138 kg1,714 kg · 81.6 kg / person
  • Beef at every meal +461 kg2,036 kg · 97.0 kg / person
➡️ Varied menus with a third of vegetarian covers avoided nearly 0.5 tonnes of CO₂e compared with beef at every meal (+29% on the total footprint). A 100% vegetarian menu would have cut the total by a further 8%.

What if we had offered jet skiing instead of sailing?

1 hour per person for the 21 participants, at about 15 kg CO₂e per person per hour (fuel).

  • Sailing trip (actual)54 kg
  • Jet ski315 kg
➡️ Choosing the sailboat avoided about 260 kg CO₂e, +17% on the total footprint for a single one-hour activity nearly 6× less
In perspective

75.0 kg CO₂e per participant is…

🚗
≈ 527 km

in a petrol car

🥩
≈ 2.5 kg

of beef

🇫🇷
≈ 3.7 days

of the average French person's carbon footprint*

* A French person emits 9.1 tonnes of CO₂e per year, including 1.6 tonnes from shared public services (schools, infrastructure, healthcare…). Only the share linked to individual consumption is used here: 7.5 tonnes per year, or 20.55 kg per day.

Room for improvement

Our recommendations for future events

🚆 Transport

  • Choose a coach company based near the venues: 264 of the coach's 455 km were empty runs to and from the Trets depot each day. With a depot about ten kilometres from the Bastide: about −150 kg CO₂e (−10% of the total footprint).
  • The 2 flights from Algiers and Bastia account for 34% of the total footprint: with no rail alternative, they were hard to avoid. The ideal venue remains one most people can reach by train, which was already the case here for all but 2 participants.

🏡 Accommodation

  • Favour shared rooms: the 8 single rooms emitted 45 kg of energy over 16 room-nights. Twin rooms instead: about −15 kg CO₂e.
  • Ask the venue for its consumption readings (electricity, gas or heating oil): energy is more than half of this category and had to be estimated with a national average.

🥗 Meals

  • Avoid beef: vegetarian lasagne for everyone at the Bastide dinner = about −62 kg CO₂e (−23% on meals). A beef meal emits nearly 6 times more than a vegetarian one (4.97 vs 0.85 kg CO₂e).
  • Switch half of the meat or fish covers to vegetarian: about −63 kg CO₂e.

⛵ Activities

  • Make the sea trip 100% under sail: the engine part is 85% of the activities footprint, about −47 kg CO₂e.
Target for the next offsite

By applying these recommendations

≈ 62kg CO₂e / participant · −17%
  1. 1. Choose a coach company with a depot near the venues−7.1 kg / person
  2. 2. Replace the beef dish with a vegetarian version−2.9 kg / person
  3. 3. Make the sea trip 100% under sail−2.2 kg / person
  4. 4. Favour shared rooms−0.7 kg / person
  5. 5. Keep the high-speed train as the main mode of transportalready done ✓
📐 Methodology and assumptions
  • Source data: the full dataset behind this analysis is available here: Data – Webyn offsite carbon footprint ↗
  • Emission factors: ADEME database (Base Empreinte, Impact CO2, Agribalyse), supplemented by Mirly estimates where no official factor exists. Data as of 22/10/2026.
  • Scope: 21 participants. The Mirly on-site coordinator, who stayed and ate at home, is not counted. Footprint per participant = total ÷ 21.
  • Transport: per-vehicle-kilometre calculation for the coach and taxis; per-passenger-kilometre calculation for trains and planes (contrails included). Private coach: 455 km over 4 days, day-by-day road distances including the run from the Trets depot and back each evening; coach factor counted at 80% (mid-size vehicle). Taxis: empty returns counted.
  • Accommodation: 1 bivouac night (zero impact, equipment counted in the survival activity) and 42 room-nights at the Bastide des Escourches, calculated in 5 items following ADEME's 2022 greenhouse-gas report for the French tourism sector: energy, services, staff commuting, construction (building over 50 years old, amortised) and extras (none: unheated pool).
  • Meals: each lunch and dinner is broken down dish by dish from the menus. Duck breast uses the poultry factor and sea bream the white-fish factor, as no dedicated factor exists. Welcome picnic counted at 80%. Breakfasts: "continental breakfast" factor.
  • Activities: 3-hour sailing trip, half under engine; survival camp counted as light-equipment wear.
  • Marrakech scenario: 4,200 km Paris ↔ Marrakech round-trip flight for the 21 participants, replacing the train and plane journeys; rest of the event unchanged.
  • Menu scenario: 146 lunch and dinner covers; factors vegetarian 0.85, chicken 1.46, pork 1.65, beef 4.97 kg CO₂e per meal; the mix is the average of the three meats.
  • Jet-ski scenario: 1 hour per person for the 21 participants, 15 kg CO₂e per person per hour.
